The Arkansas Trav'ler
From the backyard pits of Birdeye, Arkansas to two-time World Champion — this is the story of Jim Quessenberry, the man they called The Arkansas Trav'ler.

The Story
This Isn't
a Cookbook.
It's the story of a man who grew up cooking whole-hog in Birdeye, Arkansas — a town so small you blink and miss it — and somehow ended up winning the world championship twice. On two different continents.
Jim Quessenberry didn't start with a recipe book. He started with a pit, a fire, and a stubborn streak that wouldn't quit. He built the Arkansas Trav'ler competition team from the ground up, competed at Memphis in May before it was famous, and took his sauce to Ireland before most people knew BBQ traveled.
Quess: The Arkansas Trav'ler is his son's attempt to get all of it down — the stories, the technique, the philosophy, the characters — before the smoke clears for good.

About the Author
Michael Quessenberry
Michael Quessenberry is Jim's younger son and the author of Quess: The Arkansas Trav'ler. He grew up on the competition circuit — in family footage from 1989, a five-year-old Michael is already learning the craft at the pit.
The book documents Jim's journey from the backyard pits of Birdeye, Arkansas to two World Championships in Ireland — written by someone who was there for part of it and spent years reconstructing the rest from recordings, notebooks, and memory.
