James Henry “Jimmie” Johnston of Ripley, Tennessee married Elizabeth Levesque Smith. He was cattle manager of Birdeye Angus Farms — W.M. Smith & Sons, owners. Sale catalogs went out under his name. The 1959 journal photographs him walking Keystone cattle with Maurice Jr.
His line: “The way packer buyers hunt out your steers, and the way those steers look on the rail, is the best indication I know that you are producing what the market wants.” Practical herd, no winter shelter, home-raised steers as a live check on the bulls.
